Outpatient Rehab San Diego

At Healthy Life Recovery, our outpatient rehab in San Diego is built for people who are serious about long-term sobriety and need a program that fits around real life — work schedules, family obligations, and daily commitments. Whether you are stepping down from medically supervised detox or beginning treatment for the first time, our outpatient programs provide the clinical structure and flexibility to support lasting recovery.

We offer a full spectrum of outpatient levels of care, matched to each client’s clinical needs and circumstances. Every treatment plan is designed by licensed clinicians and a board-certified psychiatric team, and supported by medication-assisted treatment where clinically appropriate. Clients transitioning out of higher levels of care can also access our sober living partners in San Diego, providing a stable, substance-free environment while they move through outpatient programming.

Outpatient Treatment Levels of Care

Outpatient treatment is not a single program — it’s a spectrum of intensity designed to match where each client is in their recovery.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive form of outpatient treatment, typically meeting five to seven days per week for three to five hours per session. PHP is appropriate for clients who have completed detox or residential care and need continued high-intensity clinical support while beginning to reintegrate into daily life. Many PHP clients stabilize in a sober living environment during this phase.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers meaningful flexibility without sacrificing clinical rigor. Clients meet three to four days per week with a combination of group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric appointments, and skill-building sessions. IOP is well-suited for clients whose work, school, or family responsibilities make full-day programming difficult, and for those stepping down from PHP.
  • Evening IOP meets Monday through Thursday from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, providing a comprehensive structured program for working adults, students, and parents who need to manage daytime obligations. Our Evening Intensive Outpatient Program includes the same clinical components as the day program — group therapy, individual sessions, case management, and psychiatric care — delivered at a time that makes treatment sustainable long-term.

Why Choose Outpatient Rehab?

The transition from a more structured treatment environment back into daily life is one of the highest-risk periods in early recovery. Research consistently shows that ongoing structured care during this window — particularly the first 90 days following detox or residential treatment — dramatically improves long-term outcomes. Studies estimate that approximately 60% of people who complete inpatient or residential treatment without ongoing outpatient care will experience a relapse in the first year.

Outpatient rehab keeps clients engaged with clinical support and a sober community precisely during the period when resuming work, navigating family dynamics, and returning to familiar environments poses the greatest relapse risk. Clients in our intensive outpatient program continue building coping skills in a clinical setting while applying them in real time in their actual lives — a combination that accelerates recovery in a way that purely residential treatment cannot.

Benefits of Outpatient Treatment:

  • Greater scheduling flexibility — programs that fit around employment, school, and family
  • Ability to live at home and maintain family relationships throughout treatment
  • Freedom to continue working or attending school during the program
  • Lower cost than residential inpatient care
  • Clinically proven effectiveness for mild to moderate substance use disorders
  • Continuity of care and sober community support during the highest-risk early recovery window

Skills Addressed in Our Outpatient Programs:

Many clients struggle with progression out of treatment settings. The stress of resuming work, family reintegration, and being back in familiar locations and situations can be major risk factors for addicts in early recovery. Intensive outpatient rehabs can be a regular touchstone to remain engaged and focused on recovery during this period. Clients continue to learn effective coping mechanisms in intensive outpatient rehab and have a direct opportunity to start applying these skills as they begin to function in their day-to-day lives.

  • Relapse prevention — identifying triggers, developing response plans
  • Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) management
  • Building and maintaining sober support networks
  • Managing cravings and impulse control
  • Life skills development — communication, boundaries, routine

What to Expect?

Outpatient (OP) Care is the aftercare that clients attend when they have completed the program at Healthy Life Recovery. Every OP treatment plan is specific to the client’s needs and personal schedule. Clients have the option to continue with group therapy 1-3 days a week with ongoing individual therapy and case management sessions. Clients also have the opportunity for ongoing medical and psychiatric appointments when attending outpatient aftercare.

Schedule

Intensive outpatient programs will typically meet during the weekdays. Many treatment facilities offer daytime, as well as evening programs, that require sessions lasting for a few hours. During the scheduled meeting time, patients will meet with groups and have breaks in between each session. Common types of group sessions for an IOP include:

  • Skill-development groups which can include relapse prevention, stress management, and assertiveness training techniques.
  • Psychoeducational groups, low-key, time-limited groups.
  • Interpersonal process groups which can include single-interest groups and family/couples groups.
  • Support groups with people who are working on similar problems, such as the 12-step program.

Therapy

Healthy Life Recovery recognizes what is needed in order to provide effective treatment programs. We utilize evidence-based therapies that are proven to be effective in treating patients and improve their overall mental health. Therapy sessions can be conducted individually or with family members.

Drug Testing

Drug tests are a standard treatment protocol for outpatient programs. Most programs will utilize drug testing, but the frequency of tests will vary. Testing can be completely random, or scheduled 1-3 times per week. The goal of drug tests is not necessarily to “catch” them in the act of using. More so to reassure that participants are adhering to the program’s rules. It is also important to protect other participating members from substance use. If someone is using, it could be a sign that the individual may need a higher level of treatment.

When is Inpatient Treatment Better?

Inpatient treatment is a more extensive approach to addiction treatment. Also known as residential care, inpatient treatment provides around-the-clock care by medical professionals in a non-hospital setting. It does not possess the same flexibility as an outpatient treatment program.

People who will more likely benefit from an inpatient program are those who are physically dependent on their substance of choice. Additionally, an individual who does not have a reliable support system in their home environment would also be a good candidate. The choice ultimately comes down to the patient’s situation and should be a joint decision with an addiction specialist.

How Long Does Outpatient Rehab Last?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), defines IOP level of care as a period of a minimum of 9 therapeutic hours per week. Treatment outcomes for addicts who remain in intensive outpatient care for at least 90 days are significantly more successful. The patients are then able to transition to a less intense form of outpatient care. At the end of the day, the program length will vary from person to person, depending on certain factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PHP, IOP, and standard outpatient? PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is the most intensive, meeting five to seven days per week for several hours per session. IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) meets three to four days per week with more schedule flexibility. Standard outpatient is the lowest intensity — typically one to three days per week — used as aftercare once a client has stabilized at IOP or PHP. Our admissions team will recommend the right level based on your clinical assessment.

Does insurance cover outpatient rehab at Healthy Life Recovery? Most major commercial insurance plans cover some portion of outpatient addiction treatment. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurers to treat substance use disorders comparably to other medical conditions. We offer complimentary insurance verification — visit our insurance page or call (844) 252-8347 to confirm your benefits before starting.

Can I keep working or going to school while in the program? Yes. Our IOP and Evening IOP are specifically designed for clients with work, school, and family obligations. Evening IOP meets Monday through Thursday, 5:30–8:30 PM. PHP clients typically need to reduce work hours during the program — our admissions team can walk you through scheduling options.

Do you treat co-occurring mental health conditions alongside addiction? Yes. Dual diagnosis care is central to how we treat addiction at HLR. Every client receives a psychiatric assessment at intake, and co-occurring conditions — depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD — are treated concurrently as part of the unified treatment plan.

What does a typical day in IOP look like? A typical IOP day includes a group therapy session (skill-development, psychoeducational, or interpersonal process format), an individual therapy or case management appointment, breaks, and optional Active Recovery Track participation. The specific schedule is built around your program level and outside obligations.

How long will I be in outpatient treatment? Most clients benefit from a minimum of 90 days at the IOP or PHP level before stepping down to standard outpatient care. The American Society of Addiction Medicine’s guidelines support this — outcomes at 90+ days are significantly stronger. Your clinician reviews progress regularly and adjusts the plan based on how you’re doing.

What is the difference between outpatient rehab and residential inpatient? Residential inpatient treatment provides 24-hour supervised care in a treatment facility, away from your home environment. Outpatient treatment allows you to live at home (or in sober living) while attending scheduled programming. Outpatient is appropriate for clients with stable home environments and mild to moderate addiction severity. Our team will help you identify which level is right.
