Overview

Sober Living in San Diego

Sober living is drug and alcohol free housing for people in early recovery. Healthy Life Recovery does not own or operate sober living homes. We place clients in partner homes across the San Diego area and pair that housing with our outpatient treatment, so you have structure where you sleep and clinical support during the day.

Definitions

What Sober Living Is and What It Is Not

A sober living home is a shared residence where everyone living there is in recovery and the house stays free of drugs and alcohol. In California, recovery residences are housing rather than licensed treatment programs. The clinical work happens at a treatment provider, which is where Healthy Life Recovery comes in.

The distinction matters when you are comparing options. A house can offer structure, accountability, and people who notice a bad day before you name it. It cannot prescribe medication, run group therapy, or manage withdrawal. Anyone still facing withdrawal risk should start with medically supervised detox before moving in.

Fit and Eligibility

Who Sober Living Is For

Sober living works best for people who already have some stability and need a living situation that protects it.

Finished a detox program and are moving into outpatient care
Completed residential treatment elsewhere and are coming back to San Diego
Currently attending PHP, IOP, or Evening IOP and need a sober place to live
Leaving a structured setting, such as a hospital stay or incarceration
Want a sober, structured living situation without entering treatment

A house is not right for everyone. People who need round-the-clock medical monitoring, or who are in psychiatric crisis, need a higher level of care first. Our admissions team will say so directly rather than place someone in a home that cannot support them.

How Our Partner Homes Work

Partner homes in the San Diego area run with a live-in house manager. The manager enforces the posted house rules, administers drug and alcohol tests, and keeps track of the day to day. Rules are posted where everyone can see them, and consequences vary with the rule and the resident.

Houses are shared. Residents cook, clean, shop, and hold each other to the same standard, which is most of what makes the model work. A drug and alcohol free household also removes the easiest access points and the daily cues that make early recovery harder than it needs to be.

Many residents attend 12-step meetings, and some houses build them into the week. Meetings are one support among several, and they sit alongside therapy, medication management, and the rest of your treatment plan rather than in place of it.

How Sober Living Fits with Treatment

Housing and clinical care do different jobs. A house gives you a stable place to sleep and people around you who are doing the same work. Treatment gives you therapy, medication management, and a plan. Together they cover the part of early recovery that trips most people up, which is the hours between sessions.

Where each level of care fits alongside a partner home
Medically supervised detox: monitoring through withdrawal, with medication support where appropriate. When withdrawal is a risk, this comes before a house rather than alongside it.
Partial hospitalization program (PHP): the most structured outpatient level, with full days of clinical programming. A good pairing when you need intensive daytime care and a sober place to return to at night.
Intensive outpatient program (IOP): several sessions a week, with room to work or study. A good pairing when you are building independence and want the housing to hold the structure.
Evening IOP: the same IOP structure, scheduled after the workday. A good pairing when you are working full time and need both a job and a sober household.

Co-occurring anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder is treated alongside substance use through our dual diagnosis care. We also provide medication-assisted treatment where it is clinically appropriate. Sober living supports both, though neither depends on it.

Our Four Pillars approach, built on exercise, nutrition, community, and education, translates well to house life, where meals, gym time, and meetings are things you organize with the people you live with.

Costs and Payment

Paying for Sober Living

Sober living rent is paid to the home, not to Healthy Life Recovery, and it is separate from the cost of treatment. Rates differ by house, so the home quotes you directly. Worth asking: what the rent covers, what the deposit is, and how much notice you give before moving out.

Clinical treatment is billed separately, and that is the side insurance verification applies to. We verify your insurance at no cost, usually the same day, so you know where you stand before committing to a house. Verification tells you what your plan says. It is not a guarantee of coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sober living the same as rehab?
+

No. Sober living is housing, and rehab is treatment. A house gives you a drug and alcohol free place to live with rules and a house manager. Therapy, medication management, and clinical planning happen through a treatment program. Most people use both at once.

Does insurance pay for sober living?
+

Housing rent is usually paid privately, directly to the home, and it is separate from treatment costs. Insurance verification applies to the clinical side, which is your treatment. We can verify your benefits for free, usually the same day, so you know what your plan says before you commit to a house. Verification is not a guarantee of coverage.

How long do people stay in sober living?
+

There is no set term. Length depends on the house, your stage of recovery, and what your clinical team recommends, and it is something you agree with the home rather than something we set. Many residents stay through their step down from PHP to IOP and beyond.

Do I need to finish detox before moving into a sober living home?
+

If withdrawal is a risk, yes. Sober living homes are not medical facilities and cannot manage withdrawal. Start with medically supervised detox, then move into a house once you are stable.

Can I keep working while living in a sober living home?
+

Yes, and most residents do. Paying rent and holding a job are part of the model. If your hours make daytime programming impossible, Evening IOP runs after the workday so the two fit together.

Are sober living homes licensed in California?
+

Recovery residences are housing rather than licensed treatment facilities, so they are not licensed by the state the way a treatment program is. Certification through recognized recovery-residence associations is voluntary. Ask any home you are considering what standards it holds itself to, and ask us the same about the homes we work with.

How do I choose a sober living home in San Diego?
+

Ask about house rules, testing, the house manager's role, what rent covers, and how the home coordinates with your treatment program. Our guide on how to choose a sober living home walks through the questions in more detail, and admissions can talk it through with you.
